Month-End Money Review Checklist (15 Minutes, Real Clarity)
A repeatable month-end review: totals, top categories, surprises, and one adjustment for next month. No full audit required.
Month-end should be a stand-up, not a trial that guarantees you skip next time. Timebox fifteen minutes. If the review takes an hour, you have capture or taxonomy debt, not a character flaw.
You are looking for totals, a few surprises, and one change. You are not performing a forensic audit of every coffee.
The fifteen-minute checklist

- Spend versus income for the month.
- Top three categories.
- One surprise you did not expect.
- Recurring charges you do not recognize.
- A pulse check on any goal you named.
- Exactly one change for next month.
- An optional export or screenshot for your records.
One change only so you can tell what worked. Soft caps, a cancel, packed lunches, or a small automatic savings raise are good single changes. Known spikes (travel, a medical bill, a move) get a note, not an identity rewrite.
Put it on a calendar that survives ordinary weeks
Pick a slot that still exists when the month is messy: the first Sunday morning, the commute after payday, the night you already review the calendar. If the slot only works in a perfect month, it will not happen.
Some people use TrackMyExpense for everyday logging and light reports; others use a notebook. The review is the product. The app is the scoreboard.
